Juvenile Gharial Sighting Signals River Revival in Assam: Himanta Sarma

Guwahati, June 30: The sighting of a juvenile gharial in Assam’s river system has been described as a positive sign of ecological recovery and improving river health, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

According to the Chief Minister, the presence of the rare and critically endangered species reflects gradual improvement in river ecosystems and reinforces ongoing conservation efforts aimed at restoring biodiversity in the state’s waterways.

Officials stated that the gharial’s appearance is being viewed as a significant ecological indicator, with environmental experts suggesting it may point to better habitat conditions and reduced pollution levels in parts of the river system.

The state government has reiterated its commitment to river conservation, protection of aquatic biodiversity, and promotion of sustainable environmental practices.

Further scientific monitoring and assessment are expected to be carried out to study the species’ habitat, movement, and conservation status.
