The deliberations are expected to focus on issues related to water sharing, construction of upstream projects, river flow management, and the interests of stakeholders in both states. Senior officials, legal experts, and representatives from Odisha and Chhattisgarh are participating in the proceedings to present their respective arguments and supporting evidence.
Odisha has consistently expressed concerns over the construction of barrages and other water-related projects upstream in Chhattisgarh, alleging that such developments could adversely affect water availability in the lower riparian regions of the state. Chhattisgarh, on the other hand, has maintained that its projects are within permissible limits and are aimed at meeting local developmental needs.
The tribunal’s proceedings are expected to examine technical reports, hydrological data, and submissions from both sides before arriving at recommendations on the equitable sharing and management of the Mahanadi river waters.
The outcome of the hearings is being closely watched by farmers, industries, and residents in both states, as the Mahanadi remains a vital source of water for irrigation, drinking purposes, and economic activities across the region.
The tribunal’s deliberations are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future framework for water-sharing arrangements between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
