Bhubaneswar, Aug. 2 (UDN): The Odisha Cabinet has approved the implementation of Mukhyamantri Janajati Jeevika Mission (MMJJM) 2.0, a major livelihood initiative aimed at improving the economic well-being of nearly eight lakh tribal and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) households across the state over the next five years.
The state-funded programme will be implemented from 2026-27 to 2030-31 with a total financial outlay of ₹2,995 crore. It will be rolled out across 19 districts, covering 134 Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) and Micro Project Area (MPA) blocks, 23 Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs) and 20 Micro Project Areas (MPAs).
The second phase builds on the success of the existing MMJJM, which currently supports around 1.5 lakh tribal households in 13 districts. The expanded mission seeks to create sustainable livelihood opportunities through a diversified approach that includes agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, sericulture, forestry-based activities, Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) value chains, traditional arts and crafts, handloom, handicrafts and rural entrepreneurship.
A key highlight of MMJJM 2.0 is its beneficiary-driven model, under which eligible tribal families can choose livelihood activities based on their skills, interests and local resource potential. Each beneficiary household will receive ₹30,000 in financial assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in two instalments, ensuring greater transparency and timely support.
Apart from direct financial assistance, the programme aims to strengthen the rural livelihood ecosystem by investing in irrigation facilities, post-harvest infrastructure, storage, processing units and marketing linkages. The government expects these interventions to improve value addition, enhance market access and encourage entrepreneurship in tribal areas.
The Cabinet has also approved a dedicated package for PVTG communities, including nutritional support for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, establishment of crèche facilities in PVTG habitations and a ₹500-crore Special Flexi Fund to bridge critical infrastructure gaps through community-based planning.
According to the state government, MMJJM 2.0 is expected to significantly raise household incomes, promote scientific and climate-resilient farming practices, strengthen community institutions and accelerate inclusive and sustainable development across Odisha’s tribal regions.
