Bhubaneswar, July 28 (UDN): The Odisha Government is stepping up efforts to improve the safety, skill development and socio-economic well-being of sanitation workers and waste collectors through the implementation of the NAMASTE (National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) Scheme.

As part of the initiative, Orientation, Skill and Training (OST) programmes are being organised across the state to equip sanitation workers with the knowledge and skills required for safe and dignified sanitation practices. The training also focuses on promoting mechanised sanitation, reducing occupational risks and enhancing livelihood opportunities.
Under the scheme, eligible sanitation workers and waste collectors are being provided with a range of welfare benefits aimed at ensuring their safety and social security. These include the distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, health insurance coverage, and stipends during the training period.
In addition, the scheme extends educational support to the families of sanitation workers by offering scholarships for their children, helping them pursue higher education and improve their future prospects.
The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to recognising the invaluable contribution of sanitation workers while ensuring they have access to safer working conditions, skill enhancement and comprehensive welfare support. By combining capacity building with social security measures, the government aims to empower sanitation workers and promote dignity, safety and financial stability in the sanitation sector.
