Potato Prices Rise by ₹3 as Farmers’ Stocks Deplete; Cold Storage Supply Dominates Market

Bhubaneswar, May 8 (BNP): After the recent rise in the prices of cooking gas and milk, consumers are now facing another burden as potato prices have increased across markets. The retail price of potatoes has gone up by around ₹3 per kilogram due to the exhaustion of farmers’ fresh stock and increased dependence on potatoes supplied from cold storages.

Traders said the supply of freshly harvested potatoes from farmers has almost ended, leading to a growing reliance on cold storage stocks, which are comparatively costlier. As a result, potato prices have witnessed a fresh hike in several markets.

Consumers have expressed concern over the continuous rise in the prices of essential commodities, which is adding pressure on household budgets. Market sources indicated that transportation costs and storage charges have also contributed to the increase in potato prices.

Vendors said if supply remains limited and demand continues at the current pace, prices may remain high in the coming days. Meanwhile, consumers are hoping for market stabilization and government intervention to keep essential vegetable prices under control.
