Bhubaneswar, July 22 (UDN): Continuous rainfall across the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi basin has led to a rise in water inflow into the Hirakud Dam reservoir, prompting authorities to open 10 gates for the controlled release of excess water.
The move was taken as a precautionary measure to manage the increasing water level and ensure the safe operation of the reservoir. Officials said the water release is being carried out in a regulated manner while closely monitoring the situation across the downstream areas.
As of 6 am, the water level at Hirakud Dam was recorded at 613.33 feet, with the reservoir receiving an inflow of around 2,10,429 cusecs. Water was being released through 10 gates, with an outflow of approximately 1,86,354 cusecs. Of the opened gates, seven are located on the left side of the dam and three on the right side.
The released water has reached the Mundali Barrage in Cuttack, where a significant flow of water has been recorded. Authorities are keeping a close watch on downstream water movement as rainfall continues in parts of the Mahanadi basin.
Officials have stated that there is currently no flood threat in the Mahanadi river system. However, monitoring efforts remain active to respond promptly to any changes caused by further rainfall or rising water levels.
The opening of the gates is part of routine reservoir management during periods of high inflow, aimed at maintaining a balance between water storage, safety, and the natural flow of the river system.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay informed through official updates and remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon conditions.
