Severe Heat Stress Grips Bhubaneswar as Heat Index Touches 49°C; IMD Issues Public Advisory

Bhubaneswar, June 16: Bhubaneswar is witnessing intense heat stress conditions, with the perceived temperature (heat index) rising to nearly 49°C in the late morning hours on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

While the actual temperature was recorded at 36.8°C at 11:30 AM, high humidity levels of around 56% significantly intensified discomfort, making outdoor conditions feel far more severe than the measured temperature.

The IMD has issued a heat alert advising residents to exercise caution as the combination of high temperature and humidity increases the risk of heat-related illnesses. The advisory particularly highlights concerns for vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, and individuals engaged in outdoor work.

Authorities have urged citizens to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours between 11 AM and 3 PM, maintain adequate hydration, and take protective measures such as wearing light, breathable clothing and minimizing strenuous outdoor activity.

Health experts have also advised people to remain alert to early symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, including dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, and fatigue, and to seek immediate medical assistance if required.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as heatwave-like conditions persist, with further updates expected based on evolving weather patterns.

The advisory underscores the importance of precautionary measures as rising heat stress continues to impact daily life across the region.
