Bhubaneswar, June 8: Known for its abundant mango orchards and favourable growing conditions, Telkoi in Odisha’s Keonjhar district is emerging as a potential export hub as efforts intensify to connect local farmers with international markets.
Every year, thousands of tonnes of mangoes are harvested across the region. However, many growers continue to rely on external traders due to limited local marketing infrastructure and inadequate access to larger markets. As a result, farmers often struggle to realize the full value of their produce.
To address these challenges, initiatives are being explored to strengthen grading, sorting, packaging, and quality certification facilities, enabling mangoes from Telkoi to meet international export standards. Support from export promotion agencies and improved supply chain infrastructure are expected to play a crucial role in this transformation.
The initiative aims to create a more sustainable market ecosystem for farmers, reduce dependence on intermediaries, and increase income opportunities for rural households. Enhanced export capabilities could also help establish Odisha as a significant player in India’s growing agricultural export sector.
Officials believe that with the right investments in logistics, quality control, and market linkages, Telkoi’s mangoes have the potential to reach consumers far beyond India, bringing global recognition to the region’s agricultural produce.
The move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen rural livelihoods, promote value-added agriculture, and unlock new growth opportunities for farming communities across Odisha.
