Angul, April 12, 2025: In a significant development for healthcare in Odisha, the state government has announced that from May 1st, residents of Angul district will have access to medical services at the Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College in Talcher. The Angul District Headquarters Hospital will temporarily serve as the teaching hospital for the newly established medical college.
This decision is part of the government’s phased plan to activate the Talcher medical college, while the infrastructure at the main campus is still being finalized. As part of the preparations, the recruitment process for medical staff, including professors, associate professors, senior and junior residents, is currently underway. Approximately 100 doctors have already joined the institution, enabling the commencement of patient care services.
The Health Department is working diligently to complete all necessary arrangements, including the opening of Outpatient (OPD) and Inpatient (IPD) services. This will ensure a seamless transition and provide the local community with immediate access to healthcare under the medical college system.
Originally, the central hospital in Talcher was planned to be the teaching hospital for the medical college. However, due to limited patient inflow and inadequate infrastructure, the state government has decided to temporarily utilize the Angul District Headquarters Hospital as the teaching hospital. This change ensures that medical students can begin their clinical training while simultaneously improving healthcare access for the local population.
Once fully operational, the Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College is expected to transform the healthcare landscape in the region, providing long-term benefits and reducing dependence on distant medical facilities. This initiative is seen as a major step forward in improving healthcare delivery and education in Angul and its surrounding areas.
