Baripada, May 27: A comprehensive development plan valued at ₹52.93 crore has been drafted for the transformation of the ancient Maa Kichakeswari Temple in Khiching, located in Mayurbhanj district. This initiative is part of the Centre’s PRASHAD scheme (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive), overseen by the Ministry of Tourism.
The proposal aims to enhance the spiritual and tourism potential of the temple through a wide range of infrastructure upgrades. Plans include a heritage gateway, restoration of the Mrutyunjaya Mahadev Temple, beautification of the temple pond, improved road access, a new bus terminal, parking facilities, landscaped public spaces, pilgrim rest areas (Yatra Padia), a dining complex, cultural market (Anand Bazaar), museum, accommodation facilities, and dedicated spaces for community and religious gatherings.
Khiching, once the capital of the former Mayurbhanj princely state, already holds historical significance and draws many visitors. The site gained further national attention when President Droupadi Murmu visited the temple on February 29, 2024, and announced its inclusion in the PRASHAD scheme.
Following her announcement, a development committee was formed. After approval from the State Integrated Plan Approval Committee (SIPAC), the Odisha Tourism Department finalized the detailed proposal. Officials noted that work on the project will begin after final clearances are received.
This initiative is expected to significantly increase tourist interest and position Maa Kichakeswari Temple as a key spiritual and cultural destination in eastern India.
