National Handloom Day, Ekta Diwas Marked in Koraput; New Training Centre Inaugurated

Jeypore,11th Aug 2025: Every year on August 7, this day is observed to commemorate the strengthening of the Swadeshi Movement during the partition of Bengal. On August 7, 1905, at Kolkata Town Hall, an official declaration was made to boycott foreign goods and rely on Indian products. A century later, in 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day. The main aim of observing this day is to encourage handloom and weaving artisans.

At the Jeypore Block Office, District Collector Manoj Satya Gyan Mahalan inaugurated the Varshika Centre and Training-cum-Workshop, which will benefit all Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Jeypore block, according to Jeypore Block BDO Shakti Mahapatra. She added that many women in the Jeypore block are interested in tailoring but lack training facilities; now, in the coming days, they will receive training in all related trades, enabling them to become self-reliant. A tailoring centre has also been set up. Special emphasis is being given to Kotpad handloom in Koraput district.

The programme also discussed how the market demand for handloom products could be increased in the future.
