Bhubaneswar, August 18, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings for several districts in Odisha in view of a low-pressure area that has formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, near the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. As a result, widespread rainfall is expected to continue across the state over the coming days.
On Monday, Orange Warnings were issued for Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Gajapati districts due to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Yellow Warnings were also issued for Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur districts for heavy rain.
In addition, a Yellow Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur districts.
Rainfall intensity is expected to increase on August 19, prompting a Red Warning for Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur, while Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kalahandi remain under Orange Warning. Yellow Warnings continue for Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada, and Nabarangpur.
Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea — particularly the coastal waters of Odisha, the west-central, and northwest Bay of Bengal — until August 20, due to rough sea conditions.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has alerted local administrations to stay vigilant and take necessary preparedness measures to mitigate possible disruptions caused by heavy rain and thunderstorms.
