Government Identifies 11 Districts with Poor Industrial Development

Bhubaneswar,22nd Aug 2025:Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s government is making efforts to take industrialization to every district of Odisha. However, according to information presented in Parliament, as many as 11 districts of the state are still considered industrially backward.

The districts are Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Subarnapur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, Gajapati, and Mayurbhanj.

Responding to a question from MP Dr. Sasmita Patra, Union Minister of State for MSMEs Shobha Karandlaje informed Parliament that in these 11 industrially backward districts of Odisha, there are 4,23,760 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) employing 20,07,989 workers.

Gajapati has the lowest number with just 18,000 MSMEs, followed by Malkangiri (18,431) and Nuapada (19,513).

On the question of bank credit support to MSMEs, the Minister stated that in 2024–25, banks disbursed ₹44,950.44 crore to 3.66 lakh MSME accounts in Odisha.

Further, 1,867 micro enterprises received assistance worth ₹53.42 crore under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), while MSMEs in the state also benefited from credit guarantee coverage amounting to ₹9,683 crore.

She clarified that no special loan or package has been announced for MSMEs affected by cyclones in coastal districts.
