Professor Shortage Pushes Utkal Law Department Into Crisis

Bhubaneswar,25th Aug 2025: Utkal University authorities are troubled over poor student attendance. Since the start of the academic session, students have been urged to attend classes regularly. But the students argue, “Why should we come if there are no teachers to teach?” The University Law Department is currently running without any professors, leading to this situation.

According to reports, a total of 80 students have enrolled in both the first and second years of the Law Department at Utkal University. Out of them, 23 first-year and 15 second-year students are irregular, with attendance falling below 75 percent. The department has released a list of students with low attendance and has also stressed that students must secure at least 75Percent attendance to be eligible to appear for examinations.

Attendance Warning Amid Faculty Shortage

Teachers Listed on Website, But None in Reality

While the department has issued strict instructions to maintain attendance, the academic crisis has deepened. The head of the department retired last month, leaving the department to be managed by a single coordinator. With no regular classes being conducted, students are questioning the rationale for attending daily.

A first-year student shared her disappointment, saying she had enrolled with confidence that adequate faculty members were available, as the university website showed the department had around three professors, including the head. But the ground reality is completely different.
