Administrative Boundary Revision Put on Hold, To Resume Post-2027 Census

Bhubaneswar, 1st Sept 2025: The administrative boundary redefinition process for the 2027 census has been postponed. The process will now be suspended from January 1, 2026, to March 31, 2026. Previously, it was scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2025. The Revenue Department issued an official notification confirming that changes to administrative boundaries at the district, sub-division, tahasil, revenue village, and urban areas will be subject to state government approval until that time.

While this is a routine administrative notification before the census, its importance is magnified due to the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal Elections in Odisha in 2027. With these elections scheduled, the announcement is significant for both governance and political dynamics in the state, especially considering that the BJP is actively eyeing greater influence at the grassroots level.

The BJP has been focusing on expanding its base, particularly at the Panchayat, Block, and Municipal levels, which have traditionally been dominated by the BJD. The ongoing changes in the administrative boundaries are seen as part of a broader strategy to consolidate BJP’s political presence. The state government has granted permission for these changes, and this is expected to have a substantial impact on the 2027 elections, as it could reshape constituency dynamics and voter distribution in the state.
