Tribal Area Faces Kidney Disease Crisis Amid Limited Testing and Treatment

Korei,23rd Sept 2025:  — In the village of Sahire under Gohiragadia Panchayat, Pataranga, Korei block of Jajpur district, the number of people affected by kidney disease is increasing.

In the last three years, nearly 60 residents of this tribal settlement have died, according to villagers. Currently, more than 50 people in the village are suffering from kidney disease and undergoing treatment. Due to inadequate or inappropriate treatment, people are dying every month. Several medical teams had previously visited the village, conducted examinations, and submitted reports to the district health department, but no effective solution has been implemented so far.

The disease is being found in people of all ages, from children to the elderly. One affected man, Raju Kintu (52), said that although medical teams visit frequently and conduct various tests, no serious efforts are made to treat the disease.

Another affected resident, Kahnu Kintu, said that among the 42 people affected in Bhalukahudi, those suffering from kidney disease have very little chance of survival. There is no government aid provided to them. Monthly medical expenses range from 5,000 to 7,000 rupees, which is impossible for poor patients to afford.

Additionally, when patients go to the hospital, the hospital staff sometimes refuses to provide the necessary medicines for the disease. Living with the daily fear of death, the patients have expressed their despair.

Another patient, Lakshman Murmu (60), said that the administration does not take this issue seriously because the sufferers are poor and tribal. In the last three months, two villagers, Bhaskar Majhi (36) and Purnachandra Murmu (26), have died.

The villagers live in constant fear as deaths continue every month, but unfortunately, the health department does not prioritize the issue.

When asked, Bhavani Shankar Das, officer of the Korei health center, said that under the supervision of state-level medical officers, examinations have been conducted. He added that district officials would know about the next steps to be taken.

Repeated attempts were made to get comments from Jajpur district health officer Vijay Kumar Mishra, but he did not respond to phone calls.
