Odisha Marks a Historic Shift as Raj Bhavan Becomes Lok Bhavan

Bhubaneswar, Dec 3: In a significant step that underscores Odisha’s commitment to inclusive governance and a people-centric administrative ethos, the iconic Raj Bhavan has officially been renamed Lok Bhavan. The change comes in accordance with the directive issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and reflects a broader national move toward adopting names that resonate more deeply with democratic values and public participation.

As per the official notification, the Governor’s residence in Bhubaneswar will now be known as Lok Bhavan, Bhubaneswar, while its counterpart in Puri will be referred to as Lok Bhavan, Puri for all administrative and ceremonial purposes.

A Milestone Inspired by a People-First Vision

Sharing his thoughts on the change, Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati described the renaming as “a meaningful milestone” for the state. He noted that the new name mirrors the aspirations of the people of Odisha and aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has consistently emphasized transparency, accessibility, and stronger citizen engagement in governance.

The Governor highlighted that this transition signifies a departure from colonial legacies and represents a conscious move towards embracing names that reflect India’s democratic spirit and cultural identity. “Lok Bhavan symbolizes pride, democracy, and the promise of deeper public participation. It reflects our resolve to build a stronger connection between the administration and the people,” he said.

A Step Toward Strengthening Public Engagement

The renaming is more than a symbolic gesture—it marks a renewed commitment to acting as a bridge between the government and the public. The term Lok Bhavan, meaning “People’s House,” emphasizes openness, inclusivity, and the idea that governance thrives when citizens are active participants.

Governor Kambhampati expressed his honour in leading this transition in Odisha, adding that the new identity will inspire greater accessibility and foster shared progress. Under its new name, Lok Bhavan aims to serve as a dynamic space that promotes public dialogue, collaboration, and community-driven development.

Looking Ahead

As Odisha adopts this new identity for one of its most important institutions, the renaming stands as a reminder of the state’s ongoing dedication to democratic values. Lok Bhavan not only represents a shift in nomenclature but also signals a broader transformation toward a governance model that places people at its core.
