Tourists Flock to Giant Mahadev Statue

Kalimela, Jan, 09:  A gigantic 30-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva, majestically standing atop the Tagurakota hill under Manyamkonda Panchayat of Kalimela block, is now drawing the attention of tourists. The statue of Mahadev, sculpted in a seated posture on a tiger skin, looks especially captivating. In addition, four damburus placed around the statue and two viewpoints at the front further enhance the beauty of the site.
The statue has been constructed on a massive black granite rock platform. At present, beautification work worth around ₹25 lakh is underway by the block administration. While railing work is in progress, road construction is also continuing. However, due to the lack of electricity facilities, tourists are unable to enjoy the scenic beauty of the place at night. Similarly, there is no provision for drinking water or other basic amenities.

Describing the place as extremely charming, visitor Chiranjibi Malik said that it is in no way inferior to Kailasgiri. He added that he visited the place for the first time with his family and was very happy with the experience. Harishchandra Bhumiya and Lakshmidhar Madkami opined that if further beautification of the surrounding environment of Manyamkonda is carried out, the site could become a popular tourist destination of the district.

It is worth mentioning that people from Balraju, Potaraju, and Kanamaraju villages pass through Tagurakota hill to go for bathing at Tadakarevu, located near Polur village in Andhra Pradesh. As the famous district festival of Malkangiri, Bada Yatra, is scheduled to be held here next year, the gigantic Mahadev statue of Tagurakota is sure to attract a large number of tourists.
