Nabarangpur, Feb, 25: The district administration of Nabarangpur district on Saturday stopped a child marriage that was being arranged in the Sadar block area. The minor girl is reportedly from the Umarkote police station area.
Preparations were underway to conduct the marriage at Bhatarasiuni Church after bringing the minor there. Arrangements for the feast had already been completed. Acting on timely information, the marriage was prevented through a joint effort of the voluntary organization Shobha, Childline, and the police administration, informed Nabarangpur CDPO Meenati Nayak.
The minor girl had been hidden inside a house, but after considerable effort, the police and administration rescued her.
Those involved in the operation included the CDPO, Supervisor Rashmiprabha Panigrahi, Shobha District Coordinator Uma Satnami, Bhatarasiuni in-charge PEO Gayatri Bhandari, Childline Coordinator Chinmayee Nayak, SI Seema Lakra, ASI Premanjali Kachim, Sushant Garada, and others.
The minor was brought to Nabarangpur and produced before the Child Welfare Committee. She has currently been placed in a short-stay home. After her statement is recorded before the CWC Chairperson, the CDPO has instructed the police station in-charge to attach the recorded statement to the FIR. Accordingly, a complaint has been lodged at the police station along with the Sakhi Centre report and age-proof documents.
