Hubballi, Feb 26: The Ranji Trophy final between hosts Karnataka cricket team and Jammu and Kashmir cricket team has begun. Playing their first-ever final, Jammu & Kashmir delivered a fighting batting performance on the opening day.
Powered by an unbeaten century from Shubham Pundir, Jammu & Kashmir scored 284 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in their first innings. At stumps on Day 1, Pundir remained unbeaten on 117, while Abdul Samad was not out on 52.
After winning the toss this morning, Jammu & Kashmir elected to bat. Opener Qamran Iqbal was dismissed early for just 6 runs. However, Pundir, along with fellow opener Yawer Hassan, steadied the innings and countered the Karnataka bowlers confidently. The duo stitched together a 139-run partnership, both completing their half-centuries.
The second wicket fell at a team score of 157, with Hassan departing after scoring 88 runs. Captain Paras Dogra could not contribute much, returning to the pavilion after scoring 9 runs due to injury.
Pundir then partnered with Abdul Samad to further consolidate the innings. The Karnataka bowlers failed to break the partnership, as the pair added an unbeaten 105 runs for the fourth wicket, taking the total to 284 by stumps.
Pundir’s knock of 117* came off an innings featuring 12 boundaries and 2 sixes. Samad’s unbeaten 52 included 5 fours and a six. For Karnataka, Prasidh Krishna claimed both wickets that fell during the day.
