Phulbani,Feb, 27: The Kendu Leaf Workers’ Union staged a demonstration in front of the Phulbani, Tumudibandh, Gochapada East and West Range offices in Kandhamal district to submit a memorandum of demands addressed to the Chief Minister. This action was taken to press for the fulfillment of 17 specific demands.
Key demands include:
Increase in the Kendu leaf collection rate.
Wage hike for seasonal workers.
Ban on eviction from Kendu leaf areas.
Increase in death-time compensation.
Increase in bundle rates for bonded workers, among others.
The program was successfully conducted under the strong leadership of Saroj Kumar Karpu, the Phulbani Division Editor of the Kendu Leaf Workers’ Union and State Deputy Chairman.
Saroj warned that if the government fails to meet the demands, the union will intensify the agitation in the coming days.
