A significant rise in mass nesting activity has been recorded at the Rushikulya rookery, with tens of thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles coming ashore in a single night.

Forest officials reported that nearly 70,000 turtles emerged from the Bay of Bengal during the second day of arribada—the unique phenomenon where large numbers of turtles gather to nest simultaneously. This surge has pushed the season’s total nesting count to over 80,000.

The first day had seen a comparatively smaller number of around 10,000 turtles, making the sudden spike an encouraging sign for conservationists and officials monitoring the site.

Although the arribada began later than usual this year, the sharp increase in numbers suggests that the nesting season may gain further momentum in the coming days.

Rushikulya remains one of India’s most important nesting grounds for Olive Ridley turtles, and a strong turnout this year is being seen as a positive indicator for the species’ continued survival along the eastern coastline.
