New Delhi, March 31: The Government of India is set to take a major step to restrict unrestricted access of children to social media platforms and to curb the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI). A key report in this regard has been adopted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by Nishikant Dubey. The report is likely to be presented in Parliament on the coming Monday.
The committee has recommended that the government introduce a minimum age limit for using social media. While several countries across the world have already implemented such measures to protect children from the harmful effects of social media, India is now considering similar legislation. This step aims to prevent children from being exposed to inappropriate content online.
The committee has also expressed serious concern over the growing misuse of AI technologies. It has recommended the formulation of a comprehensive and strict law to tackle issues such as financial fraud, and defamation through deepfake audio and video.
The report suggests that India should adopt mandatory AI-related regulations similar to those in other developed nations. It also highlights how deepfake technology is being misused to harass women and innocent children, drawing the government’s attention to the urgency of the issue.
Although the government has already taken some steps in this direction, the report emphasizes that only a strong and permanent legal framework can effectively control such cybercrimes.
