Jharsuguda: A major transformation is on the horizon for the industrial and commercial sector of western Odisha. Cargo (freight) services are set to begin soon from Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda.
Preparations for the launch are in their final stages, and it is expected to significantly boost the region’s economic growth. Once operational, the service will benefit not only Jharsuguda but the entire western Odisha region, marking a major milestone in business development.
The required infrastructure and security arrangements for cargo operations at the airport have already been reviewed. A high-level committee led by J.P. Buxla, Regional Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, recently inspected the airport.
The team included senior officials from the Airports Authority of India, representatives from intelligence agencies, and cargo experts. The committee expressed satisfaction with the available facilities and security measures for handling goods.
Experts have also approved the airport’s cargo capacity and infrastructure, confirming that it is fully prepared for both incoming and outgoing shipments. The service is expected to be launched officially very soon.
According to the Airport Director, the introduction of cargo services will greatly benefit local industries, as well as small and medium businesses. It will enable faster transportation of local goods to various parts of the country.
Jharsuguda is likely to strengthen its identity as a key commercial hub, and new employment opportunities are expected to emerge in the transport and logistics sector. Initially, the service will begin with limited cargo operations, with plans to expand further based on demand and business growth.
