Rayagada, Apr 13 (BNP): Tensions escalated in Odisha’s Rayagada district as violent clashes broke out over the proposed Sijimali bauxite mining project, drawing attention to growing concerns over tribal rights and environmental impact.

Local tribal communities have been staging protests against the project, alleging that mining activities on the Sijimali hills could threaten their traditional livelihoods, forest resources, and cultural identity. Protesters have also raised concerns over displacement and the potential ecological damage to the region.
The project is reportedly linked to Vedanta Limited, which has faced opposition in several regions over similar mining initiatives. Demonstrators have demanded the cancellation of the project and greater consultation with affected communities.
According to sources, clashes occurred when tensions between protesters and authorities intensified during demonstrations. Security personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, while officials are monitoring the situation closely.
Activists and community leaders have called for dialogue and adherence to legal safeguards protecting tribal rights, including consent provisions under forest and land laws.
Authorities have urged calm and stated that efforts are underway to resolve the issue through discussion, while ensuring that development and environmental concerns are balanced.
The situation remains tense, with further developments expected as both sides hold firm on their positions.
