Nabarangpur, May 16: Gouri Shankar Majhi, MLA of Nabarangpur and Chairman of the District Planning Committee, has written a letter to Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj requesting that Nabarangpur College, the oldest college in Nabarangpur district, be declared a government college. He also urged the government to consider upgrading it into a university or granting it autonomous college status.
Nabarangpur College was established in 1971 and has been providing higher education for more than five decades. It is the oldest and one of the most prominent colleges in Nabarangpur district.
The people of the district have long been demanding that the college be brought under government control by declaring it a government college. Thousands of students are currently studying at the institution. A large number of them belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, economically weaker sections, and other disadvantaged communities.
These students are unable to afford donations or high fees. At the same time, the college is facing financial difficulties. Many staff members receive very low salaries, which are paid from donations collected from students.
Considering the larger interests of the people of Nabarangpur district, especially the student community, the time has come to declare Nabarangpur College a government college, the MLA stated in his letter.
As an alternative, he suggested that the government may consider upgrading the college to university status or granting it autonomous status.
The letter further mentioned that Nabarangpur College fulfills all the necessary criteria in this regard. Therefore, MLA Majhi requested the government to take prompt action on the matter.
