Balimela,June 8: . On this occasion, World Environment Day was celebrated by the Balimela Notified Area Council (NAC) in Malkangiri district under the chairmanship of Executive Officer.
As part of the programme, tree plantation drives were carried out at various places in Balimela along with awareness campaigns. According to available information, World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5. On this occasion, tree plantation campaigns have begun across Odisha as well as throughout the country.
To protect the environment and tackle climate change, several initiatives have been undertaken at governmental, non-governmental, and social levels. The main objective of observing this day is to create positive public awareness regarding environmental protection.
World Environment Day is dedicated to committed environmental conservation efforts. Since its inception in 1972, it has become a major programme of the United Nations aimed at spreading environmental awareness worldwide and encouraging a sense of responsibility among people towards nature and sustainability.
Considering the present environmental situation, the Odisha Government recently appealed for the plantation of 7.5 crore trees across the state through a massive plantation campaign. Environmentalists have also urged every individual to plant at least one tree in their lifetime to maintain ecological balance.
The Odisha Government has prioritized tree plantation and informed all government offices at the grassroots level through official communication. Accordingly, the Balimela NAC also gave importance to this programme and carried out plantation activities at several locations including the stadium premises, children’s park, market school, medical area, and Jagannath Sarovar, while also spreading awareness about World Environment Day.
Among those present during the programme were Balimela NAC Executive Officer Mr. Dora, Sanitation Officer Santosh Khemundu, Junior Engineers Kumudini Sethi and Sushant Kumar Das, all sanitation workers, Swachh Sathis, NAC staff members, Chairman Mr. Pradeep Kumar Nayak, and elected ward members.
