Odisha Cabinet Approves INR 2,134 Crore Projects to Strengthen Water Security, Irrigation and Tourism

Bhubaneswar, June 9: The Odisha Cabinet has approved infrastructure and development projects worth ₹2,134 crore aimed at improving water security, irrigation systems, and tourism infrastructure across the state.

The decisions were taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, reflecting the government’s focus on sustainable development and long-term resource management.

A major approval includes the construction of a new in-stream storage structure (ISS) on the Mahanadi River in Sambalpur district. The project will be built downstream of the ageing Ayodhya Sagar weir, which was constructed in the 1960s and has developed structural issues such as cracks and leakage, making restoration unviable.

The project, estimated at ₹440.34 crore including five years of operation and maintenance, is expected to be completed within 30 months. It will ensure a stable drinking water supply for Sambalpur and nearby areas while also supporting fisheries, groundwater recharge, and tourism activities.

The Cabinet also approved the spillway component of the Brutang Irrigation Project in Nayagarh district. The project is aimed at strengthening irrigation infrastructure and improving water management to support agricultural productivity in the region.

In addition, the government cleared a “Land Bank for Hospitality Infrastructure” initiative to support tourism development by making suitable land available for hotels and related projects. The initiative is expected to attract investment and enhance tourism facilities across the state.

Officials said the approved projects will play a key role in improving water management, strengthening rural livelihoods, and promoting tourism-led growth in Odisha.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to infrastructure-led development and sustainable use of natural resources.
