BMC Deploys Rapid Action Teams for Urban Flood Management and Monsoon Preparedness

Bhubaneswar (UDN): In a proactive step to tackle urban flooding and ensure efficient rainwater drainage during the monsoon season, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed eight Rapid Action Teams (RATs) across the city.

The specially constituted teams will operate round the clock and are equipped with the necessary tools, machinery, and vehicles to respond swiftly to waterlogging incidents. The RATs will be tasked with reaching flood-prone and waterlogged areas immediately to facilitate drainage and restore normalcy.

To strengthen their operational capabilities, the teams have been provided with dedicated vehicles, water pumps, drain-cleaning equipment, and tree-cutting machinery, among other essential resources. These assets will enable rapid response to monsoon-related emergencies, including blocked drains, fallen trees, and localized flooding.

The initiative was formally launched during a programme held at the BMC headquarters in the presence of the Deputy Mayor, Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Standing Committee Chairpersons, and several corporators. During the event, the equipment was handed over to the teams, and the dedicated response vehicles were flagged off.

Speaking on the occasion, BMC Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil Rana said the civic body is fully prepared to handle any situation arising during the current monsoon season. He emphasized that the deployment of Rapid Action Teams reflects BMC’s commitment to ensuring public safety, minimizing disruptions caused by heavy rainfall, and improving urban resilience.

The move is expected to enhance the city’s preparedness for monsoon-related challenges and provide quicker relief to residents in areas affected by waterlogging and drainage issues.
