Bhubaneswar, June 13: National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 Implemented: A New Learning System for Children With the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the state, significant changes have been introduced in the school education system. The new policy aims to transform traditional learning methods and create a more holistic, flexible, and student-friendly educational environment.
One of the most notable features of the revised system is the introduction of “Bagless Days.” Under this initiative, students will attend school without carrying their school bags every Saturday and for a total of 10 days each academic year. These days will be dedicated to experiential learning, practical activities, skill development, creative exercises, field-based learning, and interaction with local artisans, professionals, and community members. The objective is to reduce academic pressure and provide students with opportunities to learn beyond textbooks and classrooms.
According to the new academic framework, the school year will consist of 230 working days. Out of these:
190 days will be allocated for regular classroom teaching and academic instruction.
20 days will be reserved for sports activities, annual functions, cultural programmes, and other co-curricular events.
10 days will be designated as Bagless Days, focusing on hands-on learning experiences and practical knowledge.
The revised timetable places greater emphasis on the development of a child’s overall personality rather than concentrating solely on academic achievement. As a result, subjects and activities such as art education, physical education, sports, health and wellness programmes, vocational exposure, creativity, innovation, and practical learning have been given enhanced importance.
The NEP 2020 framework seeks to move away from rote memorization and examination-oriented learning. Instead, it encourages critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, creativity, teamwork, and real-world application of knowledge. Students will be encouraged to participate in a variety of learning experiences that help them discover their interests, talents, and career aspirations from an early age.
Education experts believe that the introduction of Bagless Days and activity-based learning will make schooling more enjoyable and engaging for children. These initiatives are expected to foster curiosity, confidence, independence, and life skills while reducing the burden associated with carrying heavy school bags and excessive academic workloads.
The policy also reflects a broader vision of preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century by integrating academic knowledge with practical experience. Through a balanced combination of classroom learning, sports, cultural activities, arts, and vocational exposure, children will receive a more comprehensive and meaningful education.
Overall, the implementation of NEP 2020 marks a major reform in the state’s education system. By reducing academic stress, promoting experiential learning, and focusing on the all-round development of students, the new policy aims to nurture confident, skilled, creative, and responsible citizens who are better equipped for future educational and professional opportunities.
