Strong Measures Taken by Koraput Administration to Combat Superstition, Protect Vulnerable Communities, and End Witch-Hunting Practices

Bhubaneswar,  June 13:  Koraput District Administration Takes Major Initiative to Eliminate Superstition and Witch-Hunting Violence

In a significant step towards building a progressive, safe, and inclusive society, the Koraput District Administration has launched an important initiative aimed at completely eradicating superstition and violence arising from allegations of witchcraft. Such incidents, often rooted in ignorance, fear, and long-standing social misconceptions, continue to threaten the dignity, safety, and lives of vulnerable individuals, particularly women and marginalized sections of society.

Recognizing the seriousness of this social issue, a high-level virtual meeting was convened under the chairmanship of the District Collector, with the active presence of the Superintendent of Police. The meeting brought together all police officers and personnel of the district to discuss effective strategies for preventing, identifying, and responding to cases related to superstition, witch-hunting, and other harmful traditional practices.

During the meeting, emphasis was laid on strengthening awareness campaigns, improving coordination between law enforcement agencies and local communities, and ensuring strict implementation of legal provisions against those who engage in or promote such inhuman practices. Officials were instructed to remain vigilant, promptly address complaints, and work closely with village-level institutions, community leaders, educational institutions, and social organizations to spread scientific awareness and promote rational thinking among the public.
The administration highlighted that superstition and witchcraft-related accusations often lead to social ostracism, physical assault, mental harassment, and even loss of life. Such acts not only violate human rights but also hinder social development and harmony. Therefore, collective efforts from government agencies, civil society organizations, educators, community leaders, and citizens are essential to eliminate these harmful beliefs from society.

The District Administration reiterated its commitment to creating an environment where every individual can live with dignity, security, and equal rights, free from fear, discrimination, and violence caused by superstitious beliefs. Special attention will be given to awareness programs in rural and tribal areas to educate people about scientific reasoning, legal protections, and the importance of respecting human rights.

Combating superstition is not merely the responsibility of the government; it is a shared social obligation. Every citizen has a role to play in promoting education, encouraging critical thinking, and standing against practices that perpetuate fear, prejudice, and violence. By fostering awareness and unity, society can move towards a future based on knowledge, compassion, and justice.
Let us all join hands to eradicate superstition, prevent witch-hunting and related violence, and contribute towards building a healthy, enlightened, and harmonious society for future generations.
