The move is based on public sentiment and linguistic accuracy, ensuring that place names better reflect their original phonetic form in Odia. Officials said the initiative is intended to protect the cultural and historical essence of the state’s identity while improving consistency in official communication.
The government stated that the decision marks an important step toward safeguarding Odisha’s cultural pride and reinforcing its linguistic heritage. By standardising spellings in line with native pronunciation, the state aims to reduce long-standing inconsistencies in the English representation of place names.
The revised names will be gradually incorporated into official records, administrative documents, and government communication systems in coordination with concerned departments.
Reiterating its commitment, the state government said the initiative reflects its broader vision of preserving Odia language, culture, and heritage while strengthening “Odia Asmita” as a core pillar of governance.
The decision is being seen as a significant cultural milestone that honours public sentiment and reinforces the state’s identity in official nomenclature.
