Bhubaneswar, June 19 (UDN) In a significant step towards cleaner and more efficient household energy use, the Odisha government has launched a targeted initiative to expand the adoption of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) across urban and semi-urban regions, aiming to gradually reduce dependence on LPG cylinders.
The programme is designed as part of the state’s broader clean energy transition strategy, focusing on improving last-mile gas connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted supply, and promoting safer and more sustainable domestic fuel options.
Officials stated that the PNG expansion will be rolled out in a phased manner, prioritising densely populated urban clusters and rapidly growing townships where demand for reliable household energy is increasing. The initiative is expected to streamline energy distribution by replacing cylinder-based logistics with continuous pipeline supply.
A Step Towards Smarter and Cleaner Households
The shift towards PNG is expected to bring structural improvements in household energy consumption, including:
- Continuous, hassle-free gas supply without cylinder dependency
- Enhanced safety through monitored pipeline distribution systems
- Reduced logistical burden associated with LPG delivery
- Lower carbon emissions compared to conventional fuel usage
Authorities highlighted that PNG is not only a cleaner fuel alternative but also a more efficient and future-ready energy solution aligned with sustainable urban development goals.
Strengthening Urban Energy Infrastructure
The initiative will also focus on expanding pipeline infrastructure, increasing household connections, and strengthening coordination with gas distribution agencies and urban local bodies. The emphasis will be on ensuring smooth implementation and wider accessibility, particularly in expanding urban zones.
Awareness and Citizen Engagement
To support faster adoption, the government plans to carry out awareness drives highlighting the benefits of PNG, installation procedures, and safety protocols. Residents will be encouraged to transition through simplified connection processes and improved service outreach.
Towards a Low-Carbon Energy Future
Reiterating its commitment to sustainable development, the Odisha government said the PNG expansion drive marks an important milestone in reducing reliance on fossil fuel logistics and moving towards a cleaner, more resilient urban energy ecosystem.
The initiative is expected to play a key role in shaping Odisha’s long-term clean energy roadmap while improving convenience and quality of life for households across the state.
