Bhubaneswar, June 27 (UDN): Sixty-two Odia migrant workers stranded in Chennai following the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, have returned safely to Odisha, with the state government facilitating their travel and onward transportation to their native villages.
The workers departed from Chennai Railway Station at around 10:00 AM on Friday and arrived at Bhubaneswar Railway Station at 6:15 AM on Saturday. Upon arrival, officials from the Odisha Labour Department received them and arranged buses for their safe transportation to their respective home districts.
The evacuation follows the June 21 industrial accident at a seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur, which resulted in fatalities and injuries among Odia migrant workers. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding worker safety and occupational conditions in industrial units outside the state.
Officials also confirmed that the death toll among Odia workers has risen to 12 after a woman from Angul district succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
The Odisha government has been coordinating closely with the Tamil Nadu administration to ensure proper medical care for the injured, relief measures for affected families, and the safe repatriation of workers.
The successful return of the stranded workers marks a coordinated effort between state agencies to ensure their safety and welfare following the tragic incident.
