Koraput, July 2: A family outing to the scenic Talamiting Waterfall in Odisha’s Koraput district ended in tragedy after a car veered off a hill road and plunged nearly 300 feet into a gorge, leaving one person dead and four others injured.
The accident occurred at Lachhamani Ghat under the jurisdiction of Kakiriguma Police Station while the family was on its way to the popular tourist destination.
The deceased has been identified as Dillip Bisoi, a resident of Lula village under Dasamantpur block. According to preliminary information, Bisoi was travelling with four family members when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the ghat road. The car skidded off the roadway and tumbled into the deep gorge before the family could reach the waterfall.
Hearing cries for help, residents of nearby Lachhamani village rushed to the accident site and launched an immediate rescue operation. All five occupants were pulled out of the mangled vehicle and taken to the Kakiriguma Community Health Centre for initial treatment.
As the condition of the injured required advanced medical care, they were later referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Koraput. Despite efforts to save him, Dillip Bisoi succumbed to his injuries.
On being informed, Kakiriguma police reached the scene, recovered the damaged vehicle, and initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver may have lost control while navigating the hilly stretch, though the exact circumstances are yet to be established.
Further investigation is underway.
