Sambalpur, July 7 (UDN): The Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur, Odisha, is set to release the first flood water of the season on July 9 following a continuous rise in the reservoir level due to heavy rainfall and increased inflow from upstream catchment areas.
The decision to release excess water has been taken as the reservoir continues to receive significant inflows amid prevailing weather conditions. The dam authorities will initiate the water release process as per the scheduled procedure to manage the rising water level.
Authorities have advised people living in downstream areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions during the water release period. The situation will be closely monitored, and further advisories will be issued if required.
The increased inflow into the Hirakud reservoir is a result of widespread rainfall in the upper catchment regions, prompting the need for controlled discharge to ensure effective water management and dam safety.
