Sundargarh, July 8 (UDN): Two persons lost their lives and eight others were injured in a head-on collision between a passenger Commander vehicle and a sport utility vehicle (SUV) near Patakijore under Sadar Police Station limits in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Rohit Tanti, owner and driver of the Commander vehicle, while the identity of the second victim was yet to be established at the time of filing this report. Both succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the accident.
The mishap occurred at around 2 pm when the Commander vehicle, carrying passengers from Sundargarh to Kinjirkela, collided with an SUV approaching from the opposite direction. The force of the impact flung both vehicles off the road, leaving the Commander vehicle extensively damaged.
According to eyewitnesses, Rohit Tanti became trapped inside the mangled vehicle following the collision and could not be rescued in time. He was well known in the area for operating the passenger service between Sundargarh and Kinjirkela.
Eight passengers travelling in the Commander vehicle sustained injuries, several of them seriously. Local residents rushed to the accident site immediately after the crash, rescued the injured occupants and shifted them to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
A police team from Sadar Police Station reached the spot soon after receiving information, recovered the bodies and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident. The damaged vehicles were later removed from the road to restore traffic movement.
Police officials said the exact cause of the collision is being investigated. Further action will be taken after completion of the inquiry.
The tragic accident has once again highlighted the need for greater road safety awareness and strict adherence to traffic regulations on busy district roads to prevent such fatal mishaps.
