Odisha Leads the Way in EV Sales with Growing Consumer Demand and Expanding Green Transportation Infrastructure

New Delhi: July 14 [UDN}:Amid the impact of the ongoing tensions and conflicts in the Middle East, consumers are increasingly opting for electric vehicles (EVs). As a result, EV sales across India witnessed a 40% growth in June 2026.
Odisha has emerged as one of the leading states in the country in terms of EV adoption. The state has recorded a significantly higher share of electric vehicles in new vehicle sales compared to the national average, particularly in the two-wheeler segment.

The share of EVs in Odisha has been rising steadily every month.
In 2025, EVs accounted for 9.5% of total vehicle sales in the state.
During January–February 2026, the figure increased to 10.3%.
Between March and June 2026, EV penetration further surged to 17% in the two-wheeler category.
This means that out of every 100 new scooters and motorcycles sold in Odisha, 17 are electric vehicles.
Similarly, in the passenger car segment:
EV cars accounted for 4% of new car sales in Odisha in 2025.
The share rose to 4.3% during January–February 2026.
It further climbed to 7.5% during March–June 2026.
Impact of Rising Fuel Concerns
Data indicates that EV sales accelerated following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. After the reported military actions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel earlier this year, Odisha witnessed a sharp rise in EV demand.
Sales of electric cars nearly doubled in the months following the conflict.
Sales of electric two-wheelers also increased almost twofold during the same period.
Other Leading States in EV Adoption
Apart from Odisha, states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Delhi have shown strong EV adoption rates.
Delhi leads the country in electric car sales.
It is followed by Telangana, Odisha, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.
During the period from January to March 2026, around 959,000 EVs were sold across India, representing a 48% increase compared to the same period last year.
Among states:
Goa recorded the highest share of electric two-wheelers, with EVs accounting for 19% of all new two-wheeler sales.
In the three-wheeler EV segment, Assam, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand emerged as leading markets.
Overall, Odisha has established itself as one of India’s fastest-growing EV markets, outperforming the national average in both electric two-wheeler and electric car adoption.
