Bhubaneswar, July 21 (UDN): Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati has called for stronger efforts to empower the state’s Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), stressing that true development is possible only when the most vulnerable communities receive equal opportunities, dignity, and the support needed to shape their own future.
Addressing a special conclave on the way forward for PVTGs at Lok Bhavan, the Governor said the progress of tribal communities is central to the larger vision of a developed Odisha and a developed India. He highlighted the importance of creating opportunities in education, healthcare, livelihoods, and infrastructure while ensuring that tribal traditions, languages, and cultural identities remain protected.
Odisha is home to 13 PVTG communities, making it the state with the highest number of such groups in the country. The Governor emphasised that development programmes must focus on improving living standards while respecting the unique heritage and way of life of these communities.
Sharing an example of how education can transform lives, the Governor highlighted the achievement of Champa Raspeda from the Didayi community of Malkangiri, who became the first girl from her community to qualify for NEET and secure admission to a medical college. He said such success stories inspire young tribal students and demonstrate the impact of providing the right opportunities.
The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Central and Odisha governments in expanding access to healthcare, education, connectivity, livelihood support, and social welfare schemes for PVTGs. He also stressed the need to ensure that government initiatives reach every eligible beneficiary through greater awareness and effective implementation.
During the conclave, a technical report on the socio-cultural, demographic, nutrition, and health status of Odisha’s PVTG communities was released. A tribal photo essay book series highlighting the lives, traditions, and cultural richness of these communities was also presented.
The event included discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing PVTGs, with participation from tribal representatives, government officials, researchers, universities, and civil society organisations. Participants shared suggestions for strengthening future policies and development initiatives.
The conclave reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to creating a more inclusive society where tribal communities are empowered to participate equally in the state’s growth journey while preserving their rich cultural heritage.
