Bhubaneswar, July 28: The Odisha government has approved the Rs 125 crore ‘Ama Similipal Yojana’, an initiative aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable development among communities living around the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR).
The scheme is expected to benefit around 200 villages, focusing on creating new livelihood opportunities while strengthening community participation in the conservation of the region’s rich natural heritage.
The programme will support local communities through sustainable income-generation activities, skill development, and initiatives designed to improve socio-economic conditions while protecting the fragile forest ecosystem.
Officials said the initiative seeks to build a stronger partnership between local residents and conservation efforts by encouraging environmentally sustainable practices and reducing pressure on forest resources.
Similipal, one of Odisha’s most important biodiversity regions, is home to diverse wildlife and several communities that share a close connection with the forest landscape. The new scheme aims to ensure that conservation and community welfare progress together.
The Odisha government said ‘Ama Similipal Yojana’ reflects its commitment to inclusive growth, sustainable livelihoods, and long-term protection of the Similipal ecosystem.
