Bhubaneswar, Aug 13: The Odisha government has decided to step up efforts for the development and protection of Puri’s historic Govardhan Peeth, while also promoting the spiritual and cultural traditions associated with Lord Jagannath.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, where officials discussed the preservation of the Peeth, land-related matters, security and improvement of facilities.
The Chief Minister directed officials to undertake a fresh review of old land settlement records to address pending issues concerning the properties of Govardhan Peeth. He also stressed the need for adequate security arrangements for Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati and the Peeth premises.
The government will also take steps to protect and preserve the samadhi sites of former Acharyas associated with the Peeth. Measures were discussed to improve facilities and management at Shri Govardhan Gaushala as well.
Puri beachfront to get spiritual makeover
The government is also planning to give a major boost to the area around Swargadwar, particularly the site where the daily Sandhya Mahodadhi Aarti is held.
Chief Minister Majhi directed officials to beautify the Aarti venue and make the evening ritual more elaborate. He also called for the development of the Puri beachfront as a grand spiritual beach, with better facilities for devotees and visitors.
The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen Puri as a major spiritual and cultural destination while preserving its historic religious institutions.
The meeting was attended by Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, senior officials and representatives of Govardhan Peeth.
The government’s initiatives are expected to strengthen the protection of the Peeth’s heritage while further showcasing Puri’s rich religious traditions and the culture of Lord Jagannath.
