Odisha Flood Response Intensifies as Fire Services Rescue 669 People

Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: Odisha has intensified rescue and relief efforts in flood-affected areas as heavy rainfall and rising water levels continue to disrupt normal life in several districts.

The Odisha Fire and Emergency Services has rescued 669 people and 95 domestic animals from inundated areas, Director General of Fire Services and Commandant General, Home Guards, Dr Sudhanshu Sarangi, said.

To strengthen the response, 115 rescue teams equipped with 78 boats have been deployed across vulnerable locations. Jajpur and Balasore are among the districts facing the most difficult conditions.

In Jajpur, around 350 people have been moved to safer locations. Fire Services personnel are working with district officials to evacuate residents, deliver relief materials and monitor areas at risk.

Rescue teams are also carrying out dewatering operations at 94 locations to clear waterlogged areas. People requiring medical attention are being shifted to nearby hospitals, while relief assistance is being provided to affected families.

The Fire Services department has cancelled leave for its personnel to maintain a continuous emergency response. Officers and staff have been instructed to remain available around the clock as authorities closely monitor the flood situation.

A 24-hour control room has been activated to coordinate rescue operations and maintain communication with teams deployed in affected areas. The Odisha Chief Fire Officer has also been sent to Jajpur to oversee the response.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local administrations. People requiring urgent emergency assistance can contact the 112 helpline.

With rescue teams continuing to work on the ground, the immediate focus remains on evacuating people from vulnerable areas, providing essential relief and ensuring medical assistance reaches those who need it.

The coordinated response by emergency personnel and district authorities is aimed at minimising the impact of the floods and helping affected communities remain safe as weather and water conditions continue to be monitored.
