Bhubaneswar, Aug. 21 (UDN): Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital in Bhubaneswar successfully saved the life of a 10-month-old baby after removing a sharp double-pointed metal pin that had become lodged in the child’s food pipe.
The infant from Rourkela was brought to the hospital on August 18 after experiencing repeated episodes of vomiting. Medical examinations, including imaging scans, revealed that the metal pin was stuck in the upper part of the oesophagus, dangerously close to the throat.
Doctors said the situation was critical, as any movement of the sharp object could have punctured the food pipe and caused serious internal injuries.
Complex procedure planned
Given the delicate location of the pin, specialists from the ENT, Gastroenterology, and Anaesthesiology departments worked together to plan a minimally invasive procedure.
Under general anaesthesia, the medical team first carefully guided the pin into the stomach to reduce the risk of injury. Using a flexible endoscope, they then retrieved it safely through the mouth without the need for open surgery.
Smooth recovery
The procedure was completed successfully without complications. The baby was monitored in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for a day before making a steady recovery.
Doctors said the case underscores the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when children swallow sharp or foreign objects, as early diagnosis and timely intervention can prevent life-threatening complications.
