Umerkote,Sept 7 [UDN}: With rakhis in their hands and love, affection and reverence for nature in their hearts, women and young girls have turned towards the forest with a pledge to protect trees. Trees provide oxygen and shade and help maintain the ecological balance. Taking an oath to protect them, the women tied sacred threads of protection around the trees.
Women and young girls from Getguda village under Jamrunda Panchayat of Umerkote Block in Nabarangpur district visited the forest on Friday and tied rakhis to trees. Choosing trees as their friends, they pledged to protect and preserve them.
According to reports, the women and young girls went to the forest carrying incense, lamps, coconuts, turmeric, rice, vermilion, sandalwood and rakhis. There, they performed rituals and tied rakhis around the trees.
They said that the initiative was not merely a tradition but an effort to save and protect trees. The local women and young girls pledged that they would neither cut down trees nor allow anyone else to do so.
“Trees may not speak, but they give life to human beings. Nature has been protecting us, and now it is our turn to protect nature,” they said.
