Five Children Suffer Serious Burns in Fire During Ganesh Visarjan in Ganjam

Ganjam, Sept. 19 (UDN): Five children sustained serious burn injuries after a fire broke out during a Ganesh idol immersion procession at Purushottampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred when a petrol can kept near a generator caught fire while the procession was underway. The sudden blaze reportedly injured the children who were in the vicinity.

Injured Rushed to Hospital

Following the incident, the injured children were rescued and taken to the Purushottampur Medical Centre for immediate treatment.

Some of the victims were subsequently shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for specialised treatment. Their current medical condition was not immediately available.

Police are expected to ascertain the circumstances that led to the fire and examine how the fuel container was being stored near the generator during the procession.

Series of Visarjan Mishaps

The incident comes days after several people died in separate drowning incidents during Ganesh idol immersion across Odisha.

On September 16, at least 11 people were reported dead in separate incidents in Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur districts during Ganesh visarjan-related activities.

The latest fire incident has once again highlighted the need for adequate safety arrangements during large public processions and idol immersion events.
