Bhubaneswar, Sept 21 [UDN}:The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast a spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha from September 22 to 25, with southern and interior districts likely to receive the most intense rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued warnings for the period, including a very heavy rainfall warning for September 23–25.
According to the latest weather update, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea by Saturday evening, September 19. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and gradually intensify, potentially becoming a depression and then a deep depression before approaching the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast around September 23.
Rainfall activity is expected to increase from September 22, while September 23 and 24 could witness particularly intense rainfall in parts of southern Odisha. Koraput and Malkangiri are among the districts specifically mentioned in the orange-warning areas, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall of 12–20 cm possible. Nabarangpur is also under an orange warning for September 24.
The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, while sea conditions along and off the Odisha coast are expected to remain rough to very rough. Fishermen have been advised to return to the coast by the evening of September 22.
