Delhi, Sept 22 [UDN}: President Droupadi Murmu has highlighted the important role played by traditional and indigenous communities across the world in preserving traditional knowledge and practices for centuries. She said that for many such communities, a deep respect for nature and the ability to live in harmony with and adapt to changing climatic conditions have remained an integral part of their way of life.
Reflecting on her own childhood experiences in a remote rural setting, President Murmu spoke about the simplicity of tribal life and the close relationship that indigenous communities have traditionally maintained with nature. She recalled how everyday practices were guided by a deep sense of respect for the natural environment and its resources.
Sharing a personal memory from her childhood, President Murmu said that before cutting a piece of dry wood for use as firewood, her father would first offer a respectful namaskar to the wood. The practice, she noted, reflected the deep reverence for nature that was embedded in the community’s traditional way of living.
Her recollection underscored how indigenous and traditional knowledge systems often carry important lessons about environmental responsibility, sustainable living and coexistence with nature.
