Bhubaneswar, Sept. 22 (UDN): Authorities in Malkangiri and Nabarangpur have announced the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres as a precaution ahead of the heavy rainfall and strong winds forecast under the influence of a Bay of Bengal depression.

The two districts have issued separate orders suspending educational activities for varying durations while stepping up emergency preparedness measures.
Three-Day Closure In Malkangiri
In Malkangiri, all government, government-aided and private schools, along with Anganwadi centres, will remain closed from September 23 to 25.
The District Education Office said the decision follows the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
The closure applies to institutions under the School and Mass Education Department, the ST & SC Development Department, as well as aided and private schools.
However, the NRTS examination scheduled for September 22 will be conducted as planned. Headmasters, teachers, Anganwadi workers and other staff have been instructed to remain present at their respective institutions.
Nabarangpur Orders Two-Day Shutdown
In neighbouring Nabarangpur, the district administration has ordered all schools and Anganwadi centres to remain closed on September 23 and 24.
The Collector exempted institutions conducting essential examinations from the closure order.
The district has also strengthened its emergency response by cancelling the leave of government officials for the two-day period and appointing nodal officers for Nabarangpur, Tentulikhunti, Nandahandi, Kosagumuda and Papadahandi blocks to monitor the evolving weather situation.
As an additional safety measure, the administration has prohibited the operation of country boats in the Indravati reservoir.
Precautionary Measures Intensified
Officials said the closures and other precautionary steps are aimed at protecting children and minimising risks as the weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall across parts of southern Odisha over the coming days.
