Bhubaneswar, Sept 23 [UDN}:The support extended by the Hon’ble Orissa High Court to the Odisha Government’s measures aimed at preventing the use of tobacco and nicotine-containing food products marks an important milestone in the State’s public-health efforts.
The High Court, in its August 21, 2026 judgment, upheld the Odisha Government’s January 21 notification enforcing Regulation 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, which prohibits the use of tobacco and nicotine as ingredients in food products. The Court clarified that the notification is intended to enforce the existing food-safety regulation and is not an independent blanket prohibition on tobacco products outside the scope of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The judgment further strengthens the government’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring effective implementation of food-safety laws.
Our objective is not merely to enforce regulations, but also to protect the younger generation from the harmful effects of tobacco and work towards building a healthier and safer Odisha.
