Malkangiri, Sept. 26 (UDN): More than 30 families stranded by floodwaters in Odisha’s Malkangiri district were rescued by the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) on Friday as relentless rain triggered by a deep depression continued to inundate several parts of the district.
The rescue operation was carried out in Kuduguda village under Kutinipali panchayat in Mathili block, where rising floodwaters had surrounded homes, leaving residents cut off from nearby areas.
Using a motorboat, the ODRAF team evacuated the stranded families to safer locations. The district administration, including the Sub-Collector and Tehsildar, reached the affected village to oversee the operation and interact with residents during the evacuation.
Families Shifted to Relief Shelter
Following the rescue, the families were accommodated at Atalguda School, where the administration arranged temporary shelter and provided cooked meals and other essential support.
Officials said the evacuation was undertaken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents amid the rapidly worsening flood situation.
Several Areas Waterlogged
Heavy rainfall has continued to disrupt normal life across Malkangiri, with water entering houses in low-lying areas and inundating several villages.
Road connectivity has also been affected as floodwater flowed over bridges at Poteru, Kankarkunda, M.V.-90 and M.V.-96, hampering movement in different parts of the district.
Over 1,150 People Evacuated
The district administration said the ongoing rainfall has affected 58 villages across six blocks, prompting large-scale precautionary evacuations.
So far, 1,154 people have been shifted from vulnerable areas to safer locations as authorities continue rescue, relief and monitoring operations across the district.
Officials said emergency teams remain on alert as the weather system continues to influence rainfall across southern Odisha.
